Sip for Peace

Connecting the experience of tea  . . .

“Who would then deny that when I am sipping tea in my tearoom I am swallowing the whole universe with it and that this very moment of my lifting the bowl to my lips is eternity itself transcending time and space?”

 Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki

. . . with visions of world peace.

“World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not the absence of violence; peace is the manifestation of human compassion.”

 Dalai Lama

I’ve listened to this Ted Talk by John Hunter many times. It inspires me and continues to fuel my belief that humanity will one day inhabit a world without war. The children in his elementary school classroom accept the challenge to solve the world problems. And within the structure of the game and the efforts of the community, they succeed.

It reminds me of conversations that go something like, “. . . since we can’t solve the problems of the world . . .”   What we’re really saying is that we’re finding it increasingly more difficult to believe that any of us can make a difference.  So I will be interested to watch how the experience that John Hunter has inspired in his students fuels the direction of their lives and their faith in a better future.

In August I conducted a Sip In at the L.A. Tea Festival and this past weekend we gathered for another at the Midwest Tea Festival in Kansas City. Using the peace songs of the 7o’s, quotes by writers and world leaders as well as the Imagine Cards, we focused on the idea that tea is already the 2nd most consumed beverage around the world. We are a community for whom tea is more than just a beverage.  I invite you to use some of these same resources for your own Sip Ins.

Thank you for joining us.
